Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises to 34,568: ministry
GAZA, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 34,568, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said in a press statement on Wednesday. During the past 24 hours, the Israeli army killed 33 Palestinians and wounded 57 others, bringing the total death toll since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict to 34,568 and injuries to 77,765. Some victims remain under the rubble amid persistent Israeli attacks and a lack of rescue crews, said the statement. Israel launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage. ■

Predsednica Evropske komisije Ursula von der Leyen je v videonagovoru čestitala Sloveniji ob 20. obletnici vstopa v Evropsko unijo. Izpostavila je, da so bili Slovenci vedno zgled pri izkazovanju solidarnosti do drugih Evropejcev.
»Zahvaljujoč vašemu članstvu se je tudi Evropa spremenila na bolje. Slovenci ste bili vedno zgled pri izkazovanju solidarnosti do drugih Evropejcev. Vedno ste bili pripravljeni pomagati sosedom v težkih časih,« je poudarila predsednica Evropske komisije.
»Vedno ste nas opominjali, da naša unija še ni popolna in da so vsi prebivalci Zahodnega Balkana del te družine. S Slovenijo je Evropa močnejša, tako kot ste z Evropi močnejši vi,« je dodala.
Mineva 20 let, odkar je Slovenija postala članica EU. Bila je del največje širitve unije, ko je v povezavo hkrati vstopilo deset držav. Slovenija je z vstopom v unijo in Nato - vanj je vstopila dober mesec prej - izpolnila strateška zunanjepolitična cilja, ki si ju je zadala po osamosvojitvi.
