Vladimir Zhirinovsky , a Russian nationalist who died on Wednesday at the age of 76 as a result of coronavirus infection, marked the political scene there as rarely any other actor. In Russia, he was best known as an unbridled politician without brakes, always ready to say or undertake some bizarreness, and outside of it as an example of the most extreme nationalism threatening the world with nuclear bombs. Zhirinovsky spent almost 35 years on the political scene, as president of the far-right, quasi-fascist Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), which was neither liberal nor democratic. In the Homeland War, Zhirinovsky, on the other hand, played a dishonorable role in supporting Serb separatists he visited even in occupied and devastated Vukovar.

In those more than three decades, he ran for president of Russia no more, no less than six times, and in the mid-1990s it seemed he could even come to power. On the other hand, he always found ways to cooperate with every government, from the communist government in the early 1990s to the governments of Boris Yeltsin and, ultimately, Vladimir Putin .

After he died, the Russian portal The Moscow Times published an article entitled that the "court madman" of the local politics had died. These words describe well how he was seen by the Russians who were critical of him. Those who would vote for him, on the other hand, said that he was the only one to say what the Russian people thought. He promised, among other things, that Russia would retake Alaska and fill Germany with nuclear waste. Poland will be wiped off the map. He first ran for president back in 1991 when he surprisingly finished third, winning 8% of the vote. The first democratic president, Boris Yeltsin, won, and his term in the 1990s proved to be very unsuccessful.

Precisely because of the economic misery that prevailed in the 1990s, Zhirinovsky recorded great political growth. He promised the Russians the restoration of an empire that would include the territories of the former Soviet Union. In the 1993 elections, he told men that if he came to power, men would be able to afford vodka, and women could afford quality underwear. In the parliamentary elections of 1993, the party of this nationalist finished first, and received almost a quarter of the votes. The West suddenly had to fear that this frivolous but popular politician would come to power instead of the then already unpopular and weak, but mostly pro-Western Yeltsin. But Zhirinovsky has always found ways to retain principled criticism of the ruling party, but also to cooperate with them. As early as 1991, he supported a coup against the then President of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev , which was unsuccessfully attempted by communist hardliners. From that time, there were criticisms of the most informed who claimed that the KGB and the Communists actually created Zhirinovsky and the LDPR as a fake opposition party under the control of the government. But later in the 1990s, his Duma deputies were always ready to ensure Yeltsin's survival during any attempt to remove him. After Putin came to power, Zhirinovsky always supported him. It was in the 1990s that Žirinovski played his most controversial role for the citizens of Croatia . In 1994, Zhirinovsky visited occupied places in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he proclaimed that any attack on Serbia would mean an attack on Russia. - If any bomb falls on Serbia , we will consider it an attack on Russia - he told the Serbs in Bijeljina at the time, where he met with Radovan Karadzic. Bijeljina is not part of Serbia, but that bothered Zhirinovski the least. - It is good for our morale that he came, he showed us that we are not alone and that not everyone is against Serbs - one participant in the rally in Bijeljina told the Associated Press (AP) at the time.

He also met with Milan Martic , and visited destroyed Vukovar. The Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reacted by sending a letter to the UN envoy for the former Yugoslavia, saying that the visit would have negative effects on the normalization of relations between Serbs and Croats. Zhirinovsky acted as the protector of the Serbs: after Operation Storm , he took part in a protest rally in Moscow in front of the Croatian embassy. - If we had another president, the Russian army would already be there, and no one could even touch the Serbs - Zhirinovsky said on the occasion of the Croatian action, alluding to Yeltsin's alleged inactivity. This was not the only time he considered which part of the territory he would take away from Croatia. In 1994, he also visited the Slovenian nationalist politician Zmago Jelinčić , with whom, by the way, he discussed the territory that should be taken from Croatia and annexed to Slovenia. When the debate reached that territorial point, the AP noted at the time, Zhirinovski asked a journalist who was translating if he thought it was a "good idea", ie the Slovenian annexation of Croatian territory. When he told him not to think, he said "Yes, you're right, get it out." That conversation describes well the way in which Zhirinovsky operated. This politician was often compared to Vojislav Seselj. After the 1990s, his political star sank somewhat, but he ran for president regularly, and along the way he mostly supported Putin. The Russian public and international actors took him less and less seriously, but he could still always find enough people to vote for him. In the 2018 presidential election, he won 6% of the vote, and Putin almost 80%. The regime in Moscow would often use Zhirinovsky and his party to show that Putin is by no means the biggest extremist in Russia. In the meantime, the health condition of this politician has deteriorated, especially after he contracted the coronavirus in early 2022 , although he claimed to have been vaccinated against the disease eight times. Due to his illness, he did not take part in the discussions on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but he found himself in the media spotlight because everyone remembered that he had declared war almost in a day in December. - At four o'clock in the morning on February 22, you will feel our new policy. I would like 2022 to be a peaceful year, but I love the truth. I have been telling the truth for 70 years. This is not going to be a quiet year. This will be the year when Russia will become a great state again - he said in the Duma at the end of December. Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
