SOUTH AFRICA BACKS CHINA-BRAZIL PLAN TO RESOLVE UKRAINIAN CRISIS
South Africa has supported the Sino-Brazilian consensus on resolving the Ukrainian crisis and called on the countries of the Global South to strengthen cooperation to achieve peace, RIA Novosti has reported citing the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Li Hui, the Chinese government’s special representative for Eurasian affairs, visited South Africa on 2 August and discussed the issue with the country’s authorities.
“The Republic of South Africa highly appreciated China’s ‘shuttle diplomacy’, expressed the view that countries of the Global South need to strengthen cooperation, lodge a voice of honesty and justice with the international community to create conditions to promote de-escalation and ultimately achieve peace,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Pretoria expressed support for the China-Brazil six-point consensus and readiness to promote it in multilateral formats, the ministry added.
Li Hui said the consensus reached by China and Brazil has received positive responses from more than 110 countries, and emphasised China’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with South Africa to build an international consensus.
Earlier, Li Hui visited Brazil, where the two sides agreed to strengthen coordination to promote a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said earlier that China would send Li Hui on visits to Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia to conduct the fourth round of “shuttle diplomacy” on the Ukrainian crisis, noting the international community’s concern over the risk of conflict escalation.
