Ukraine ready to lend expertise on defending Mideast oil infrastructure, Zelensky says
Ukraine is ready to provide its expertise to help defend oil infrastructure in the Middle East as the Iran conflict spirals, President Volodymyr Zelensky says.
Ukraine sending experts to Middle East to help counter Iranian drones
“All of them face a serious challenge and speak openly about it: Iranian attack drones are the same ‘shaheds’ that have been striking our cities, villages, and our Ukrainian infrastructure throughout this war,” he added.
Iran’s delta-winged Shahed 136 drones have long been used by Russian forces in its ongoing war with Ukraine.
The relatively cheap weapons, which cost roughly $50,000 to produce, are quickly becoming a problem in the now five-day U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. The drones have hit regional allies of Washington, including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, as Tehran attempts to inflict damage to Gulf countries friendly with the U.S. or hosting American troops.
The attack drones represent a major challenge to the U.S. military, with air defenses unable to detect and intercept them all given their ability to fly low and slow, Trump administration officials told lawmakers during a closed-door briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, as reported by CNN.
What’s more, the easy-to-manufacture aircraft are causing American forces to rapidly use up expensive and hard-to-produce munitions and are able to sneak through and damage bases, ports and critical infrastructure when defenses get saturated. It was a drone attack that killed six U.S. service members on Sunday in Kuwait.
Ukraine has become an expert in Shaheds, as Russia has used the drones to attack cities, infrastructure and military positions since fall 2022.
Zelensky said the Ukrainian experts sent to the Middle East will operate on-site, with teams already coordinating such efforts.
“We are ready to help protect lives, defend civilians, and support real efforts to stabilize the situation and, in particular, restore safe navigation in the region,” he said.
He also called on the European Union, European countries and the Group of Seven “to take active measures both in dismantling the Iranian regime’s terrorist capabilities and in protecting lives in the region and global stability.”
