King Juan Carlos I issued a stern message to the Spanish media this week after returning to the country for a regatta event. The former monarch, who abdicated in 2014, spent six days in Galicia last week with friends and family.

During his visit, Juan Carlos participated in the Xacobeo Trophy regatta aboard the Bribón, coming in at third place. However the 87-year-old did not seem to be as mobile as he used to be, and was seen having difficulty walking.

As reported by Monarquia Confidencial, when asked about this and the condition of his health, he sternly told the local media: "I'm fine. You can tell all the lies you want, but I'm fine. You see, I'm not in a wheelchair.”

On the evening of Holy Thursday, 29 March 1956, Infante Alfonso died in a gun accident at the family's home Villa Giralda in Estoril, on the Portuguese Riviera. The Spanish Embassy in Portugal then issued the following official communiqué:^[12]

Whilst His Highness Prince Alfonso was cleaning a revolver last evening with his brother, a shot was fired hitting his forehead and killing him in a few minutes. The accident took place at 20.30 hours, after the Infante's return from the Maundy Thursday religious service, during which he had received holy communion.

Nekdanji španski Juan Carlos, ki že nekaj let živi v izgnanstvu v Združenih arabskih emiratih, naj bi imel v svojem življenju na tisoče ljubic. To je eno od razkritij dokumentarnega filma televizije Sky, ki bo premierno predstavljen 21. maja letos.

"Juan Carlos – ljubezen, denar, izdaja" (v izvirniku: Juan Carlos – love, money, betrayal). Takšen je naslov dokumentarnega filma o 85-letnem Juanu Carlosu. Ta je bil španski kralj od novembra 1975 do junija 2014, ko je prestol prepustil svojemu sinu Felipeju. Od takrat velja v Španiji za nekakšnega upokojenega kralja, piše nemški Bunte.

Leta 2020 je Juan Carlos, ki ima po navedbah New York Timesa pod palcem 1,8 milijarde evrov, zaradi vpletenosti v korupcijski škandal odšel v izgnanstvo v Abu Dabi v Združenih arabskih emiratih. Zaradi španske ustave nekdanjega kralja zaradi domnevnih koruptivnih dejanj ne morejo kazensko preganjati.

Poleg korupcijskih škandalov dokumentarec razkriva tudi spolno življenje nekdanjega španskega kralja. Ta je od leta 1962 poročen s Sofio, ki prihaja iz grške kraljeve družine. V zakonu so se jima rodili trije otroci: sin Felipe (ki je zdaj španski kralj Filip VI.) ter hčerki Elena in Christina.

Ta zakon naj bi že kmalu propadel, a sta Juan Carlos in Sofia na papirju še vedno zakonski par. "Sofía je morala veliko potrpeti. Natančnega števila ni, a menda je imel na tisoče ljubic," v dokumentarcu pravi španska raziskovalna novinarka Rebeca Quintans Lopez.
